Wing-tagging of Vultures launched in Morocco

The Griffon Vulture was wing-tagged and then released at Jbel Moussa

Yesterday, 8 March 2015, we released the Griffon Vulture (Gyps fulvus) whose story we shared with you here last week. We choose Jbel Moussa for the release of the vulture because it has all the condition for such an operation. After several attempts, the vulture flew successfully and went north before settling in one of the rocks in the area.

Before its release, we marked the vulture with wing-tags (MA1) for its subsequent monitoring. This is very significant because we can consider this event as the beginning of the program of wing-tagging of vultures in Morocco.

One of the inconvenient factors during the release operation has been the tameness of the vulture because he used to the presence of people during the recovery phase, and this complicated its release during the first attempts.

The passage of some migratory birds of prey in the area including 2 Egyptian Vultures (Neophron percnopterus) and a Griffon Vulture have been a key point in the progress of the release operation.

It is expected that within these days the released vulture would gather sufficient strength to cross the Strait of Gibraltar. And hopefully it can be observed by the ornithologists from the north shore of the Strait and so we make sure of its arrival.

The regional delegation of the High Commission for Water, Forestry and Desertification Control (HCEFLCD) of Tangier-Tetouan, represented by Abderrazzaq Majidi, an engineer in charge of forest management in the M’diq-Fnideq area, participated in the operation. Some member of the regional section of GREPOM and the protagonist of the vulture’ recovery, Abdelhafid Touel also participated.

After the rehabilitation “at home”, the wing-tagging was also at Tétouan before the transfert of the vulture to Jbel Moussa.
